A Small Garden with a Pretty Pond

In the past, I have shown this small, but charming garden only in bits and pieces. It is about time I did a post that put it all back together!

The back garden is a typical suburban lot, but the homeowner has done some very nice things with a property that could otherwise have been quite ordinary.

A cedar hedge was added to create some privacy and raised plantings beds were built around the perimeter of the yard.

Did you notice the edging on all the flowerbeds and the pond?

It keeps the grass just where it should be and contains the flowerbeds in a way that always looks very neat and tidy.

There is a generous deck right off the back door and overlooking the pond. On the right is a detail of the partition that helps keep this outdoor space private.

Throughout the garden there are little hints that invite you to "walk this way."

Every time I look at the picture of Gooseneck Loosestrife, lysimachia clethrodes I admire it so much that I begin to think of trying to find a spot where I can contain it.  Then I remember how invasive it is and think again.

That is Ligularia on the lower left, with a blooming Heuchera on the lower right, and Lady's Mantel is the lime colored flower just behind it.

I believe this shrub is a Cutleaf Tiger Eyes Sumac, Rhus typhina 'Bailtiger' Tiger Eyes.
Love that outrageous color!

Bee Balm, Monarda 'Marshall's Delight'

The small pond is set into the natural upward slope of the backyard.

I am sure it must be wonderful to sit on the deck, watch the fish and listen to the waterfall.

Have a really great weekend everyone!

  1. There is some lovely planting in this garden which really gets me thinking . It is also soo well tended that I am left feeling a wee bit guilty as I think of the dandelions popping up in mine ...

  2. For me this garden is very large Jennifer. But a wonderful garden to see. I have a pond too and it is very special to see what is going on around the pond. Fish, insects, and it's always beautiful to see when the sun is shining the way how the oxygene plants are giving theire bubbles.
    Have a wonderful weekend Jennifer.

  3. Beautiful garden. The owners certainly know how to plant densely and with great skill.

  4. It's gorgeous, Jennifer. Just like all the gardens you share with us. I love that about your blog. You showcase such wonderful gardens and I'm inspired on every visit.

For example, the combination of the ligularia with the heuchera is a great combination - the way that the purples are picked up together is terrific. Also love that urn!!

  5. Beautiful!!! Simply beautiful!!! Thank you for the tour. I love the Ligularia as well- I have the giant here at my house but we have a few varieties at the nursery. It is a great tough little plant. Everything looks happy and thriving. Great shots of a wonderful garden! Love the fish- yes, could sit for hours there and watch them.

  8. A spectacular garden indeed, thank you for sharing it. I'd need more convincing that this is a "small" garden though, it sure looks a heck of lot bigger than my space and I'm on 1/3of an acre.

  9. Not sure if I would call this a small garden maybe it is the way it is designed that makes it look larger. Full of lovely plants and plenty of inspiring ideas. Thanks for the tour.

  11. Thanks for your comments everyone. I guess size is relative. In comparison with my own jungle of a garden this is "small". This homeowner's backyard was wide, but not deep, and is quite typical in size for a suburban lot. Perhaps I should have titled the post " A Medium Sized Garden with a Pretty Pond"

  12. Lovely garden! Is it made in Japanese or Chinese style? I love this pond of 2 parts: with running water and with quiet water for water plants.
    Have a nice weekend!

  14. This is really a colorful garden. It does look larger than described, but is it your angle of view in the photo making it so?

    1. Donna, I do think my photography does make the garden to be bigger than it is in reality.

  15. Jennifer girl this is no small garden or pond .. it is amazing!
I love the privacy and all of the plants .. I have the dreaded goose neck, and I have not had a problem with it in the ally way between our house and the neighbor's .. I bet you can find the perfect spot to try it out again .. dip your toe into the circle and give it a go girl ! LOL
    Joy ;-)
PS .. I could watch those fish forever !

  16. Small garden...I suppose everything is relative! You could fit the whole of my garden in one corner and hardly notice it!

It is a lovely garden though and I could kill for a pond and a waterfall like that!
When I see people presenting gardens on their blog that are obviously not their own I always wonder if this is a garden they have designed, or if it is a garden they know through neighbours, family or friends, or just one they found on the Internet. Do you know this garden and the owner? It would be interesting to hear a bit about the background :-)

    1. I like to present gardens other than my own to keep things interesting for myself and readers too. I always learn so much from other gardeners! I have been bold enough to knock on the doors of perfect strangers and ask if I can take pictures of their garden. So far the gardeners who I have met in this way have been very kind and generous. I also photograph gardens on tours.
Sometimes the homeowner of a garden on tour is not even present during the tour. In the case of this garden, I have been there twice and have chatted with the gardener.
It is good to have your feedback Helene. I sometimes included a background on the gardener and their garden and will try to do so more often in the future.

  17. What a gorgeous garden. Is that sweet autumn clematis on the arbor? I love the Lysimachia (brave to plant that) and Heuchera. And that pond!

    1. Hi Jason, I blew up the image on my computer screen and I believe that the vine is actually a honeysuckle.

  18. You had me with the monarda in your first photo (one of my most favourite summer flowers!) This garden does everything right. It's like a mini estate!

  19. Loved the tour of your gardens. I pulled out the gooseneck loosestrife from my garden - too small for it to create a large clump. It's nice to have your pond and waterfall near the deck to appreciate it. We always sat up high on our deck and then I had hubby build a covered area by our pond so we could sit 'in' the garden for a change.

  21. How absolutely beautiful..it looks like it's been groomed by a magazine stylist crew...so lush, perfect almost in the nicest way.

I love what they have done...it's not a overnight sensation is it? A work of love.

I hope to get to the Pond Tour this year. Hopefully they will have many like this one on display.

  26. This is a very lovely yard. There are so many components I like including the pond with waterfall, the Tiger Eye Sumac (you should see this tree in the fall - it is absolutely stunning!), and the urn. Thank you for sharing this little piece of heaven!

PS I am a new follower (GFC)

  27. I'll take your word that this is a "small garden", Jennifer--the owners have made so much of their space that it looks like a large estate to me! So many lovely plant combos, and I agree about the edging--it really sets off the beautiful flower beds.
