The New Sleeping Arrangements

I had forgotten what it was like to have a puppy in the house!

In the last few months there have been many times when it has felt like every sentence
I utter has begun with the name Piper.

Piper stop that!

Piper drop that!

Piper stop digging that hole in my garden!

And when the inevitable puddles have appeared on the floor, the reprimand has often shortened a long, drawn-out growl of frustration: PIPERrrrrrr!

Interestingly, there has been a subtle shift in the order of things in the last few weeks.

Piper still looks up to his big buddy....

but he has grown by leaps and bounds.

Piper's a big boy now!

When the old dog snaps with impatience, Piper talks back.

And then there is the curiosity of the new sleeping arrangements.

Piper has claimed the most comfortable bed for his own and amazingly Scrap, who claimed it previously, has let him do so.

Is relinquishing the comfy beds some act of kindness on Scrap's behalf?

Or has Scrap somehow acknowledging the dawn of a new, younger pack leader?

There is just one final curiosity about the new sleeping arrangements that I'd love to have answered:

How is this comfortable?

  1. Such good dogs! Great pics, love them. I think you maybe should add an extra comfy bed to the den for Scrap.

    1. The boys are quite spoiled, so there is actually an abundance of beds. It's more that this particular bed was Scrap's favourite. It seems to be Scrap's choice to relinquish it and that for me is the curious thing. Piper is still half his size, so if he insisted Scrap would certainly have his way.

  2. Oh I just love Piper. My dog does the same thing. His body is on the pillow and his head in on the floor. Or he lays on his back with his 4 feet up in the air.

Your dogs are so beautiful, what a joy to have them. One day you will realize that Piper has grown up.

Enjoy your week with you pretty dogs.

    1. I read somewhere that a dog on his back with his feet in the air was a sign of tummy discomfort. I am not sure if that's true or its an old wives tale. When his head isn't trailing on the ground, Piper's feet are often up and waving in the air when he's sleeping.

  4. Wonderful! The photos tell such a story over quite a short time, perhaps it is the changing of the guard..... old always gives way to the young eventually!

    1. A changing of the guard seems to describe the situation perfectly Gerrie.

The little one is so adorable, but the expressions on Scrap's face are just precious.

    1. Thanks Lisa. That means a lot coming from such a talented photographer as yourself. Piper does fray Scrap's nerves sometimes, but he does seem to love him.

    1. Puppies do have endless energy. In future there will be just one or two dogs I think.

    1. I think it took Scrap a bit of time to figure out what to do with all that puppy energy and enthusiasm, but now the do seem to be best buddies.

  11. Beautiful photos. I love how you capture their personalities even when they are sleeping. Sounds like there is definitely a new kid in town. Our newest addition and youngest dog has become the pack leader too.

    1. It is funny how subtle the changing of the guard can be isn't it. Domestic dogs still have pretty strong pack instincts don't you think?
