Hi! Love your blog! I think that the shrub you referred to as "Japanese Tamarack" is actually a "Tamarix". Whether Japanese or not, I don't know, but they grow well here in very dry Lillooet, BC. In fact, I've ordered one for my desert-like front yard! They're quite lovely when they bloom.
Yes, I believe that you are right. It is a Tamarix. Thank you! I think I got the idea that it was Japanese because the one and only time I have seen this plant was in a local Japanese style garden.
