The Dog Days of Summer

I sometimes think that having dogs is like having children who never grow up!

The hot weather we have had for the last month and a half has been hard on the furry members of our family. Dogs who normally jump at the chance to go out in the garden, now prefer to be flaked-out on the cool ceramic tile of the kitchen floor.

On an evening when it is too hot for the dog park to be an option, I sometimes turn on the sprinkler. The oldest two run and jump around like excited children.

My hubby took these pictures the other night. Can you believe that Buddy is over 12 years old?

Not everyone is thrilled about getting wet. Note the coward caught in the line of fire.

Of course the best part of the whole experience is being towel-rubbed-dry.

Isn't this the life?

  2. This looks like so much fun! Brilliant pictures, and so funny. I love the way they try to catch the water. We have one that loves the water, and one that hates it!

  6. I have never seen dogs play in the sprinkler like this!! What a riot! Mine would be like your third one....hiding away from the water!

  8. It has to be hot for a Sheltie to like being wet. Our Sadie was not real fond of water, yet she loved to balance on the bow of a motor boat with her fur blowing every which way. We pick up a Golden Retriever tomorrow to be foster dog parents till she finds a home. Will be our first dog since Sadie died over a year ago.

    1. Believe it or not George, when I was a kid growing up, we actually had a sheltie that loved to swim! It was a short walk to a nearby lake and he would come along for our daily summer swim. You couldn't keep him on shore! He'd jump in and swim to his heart's content.
You are right though that most sheltie's hate the water. Though the older two dogs love the sprinkler on hot days, they generally don't like the water.
Good luck with the Golden Retriever! I think it is wonderful that you are willing to be foster a dog, and I hope it helps ease your loss of Sadie.

  10. Just fabulous. Those shelties sure look like they're having fun. My border collie used to attack the sprinkler but I don't think she ever just went in to play like those two are.

  14. I think you're right - having dogs is like having kids that don't grow up. The dogs look so happy and cool.

  17. It is great when the dogs like water, mine does not! My daughter-in-law's dogs love the water, but they are hunting dogs. Mine is a terrier, meaning of the earth, so maybe this is why the water is a no, no.

I love the photos, like stop action, so effective.

  19. Love, love these photos! The last one is precious. I bought Sophie a kiddie swimming pool last year, thinking as a Golden, she'd love to swim. No, she refused to go in, but thought it was a pretty neat water dish:)

  22. It would be so fun to watch them jump and have fun with the water! My sister doesn't have children but have dogs and cats, and she talks to them as if they will reply with words. She is not very kind to children but is overly kind to dogs!

  28. Looks like great fun! I had a golden who adored bath time. When I said "Hop in the tub," he would. I never tried a sprinkler with him though.

  31. Makes me want to go outside, put the sprinkler on and have a run around. Although I think Bart would just sit on the steps and watch.

My golden loves the water too. Just loves it. My springer likes it, too, but nearly as much. They have their own pool of course.

I think your dogs have a pretty darn good life! As they should!
